about

In 2002, after Louis Philippe, Danny Manners and I had presented an evening of words and music at the Maroquinerie theatre in Paris, we were approached by Bertrand Burgalat of Tricatel Records to record an album.

The centrepiece of the album was my short story 9th & 13th, for which Danny had composed piano accompaniment. The rest consisted of readings from my novels, combined with instrumental tracks written by Louis and Danny.

We drew mainly on my novels The Rotters’ Club (which was then newly published) and The House of Sleep. Since another of my books, What a Carve Up!, had partly been inspired by a Yuri Gagarin-themed song of Louis’s, we also decided to include his other tribute to the famous cosmonaut, Destination Moon.

On Three Views of Cicely the character roles are taken by Louis, Danny and me, with guest artiste Esther Freud providing the voice of Cicely herself. The child’s voice at the end of Fires Rise and Die is Camille Auclair’s.

Alone With Shirley (Allein mit Shirley) is the title of What a Carve Up! in its German translation.
